Scintigraphy, Radionuclide Radiology and Nuclear Medicine are all names to describe the same techniques. These techniques use radioactive isotopes to investigate pathology and function in patients. The isotopes or radionuclides are usually injected or swallowed and the radiation emitted is detected by an external device. Gamma ray emitters are usually detected using a Gamma camera (click) and positron emitters (which by annihilation produce paired gamma rays) are detected using positron emission tomography (PET scanner). |
